NOTE TO SECOND EDITION. in the second edition a number of mistakes have been corrected. New facts, that have come to light during the past twenty years, have been incorporated in the text, whenever possible. Some of these are to be found, grouped together under the heading "Addenda", on page 488. With such a deeply rooted, but flourishing, tree as Orchestration, both soil and air have to be watched. And the natural result of this is a certain variety. Our garden-book must include, not only the antique topic of what the Denners did with their primitive chalumeaux, but also the modern question of what students ought to do with their lively saxophones. phones.
